So – Which Countries Best Represent Our 5 Senses?
SIGHT – INDIA
Now, India is exactly what Dame Judy Dench said in the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: “India is an assault on our senses,” and she hit the nail on the head.
I could have easily picked India as a top for any of these titles, but in the end, India ruled on sight. Not only is every turn bursting with colour, but market stalls are overflowing with flowers, spices, and herbs in every colour.
It’s also home to the miraculous festival of colour—the Holi festival. I attended Holi in 2016, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. An explosion of colour in an environment of utter madness—is something I feel should be on everyone’s bucket list!
In addition to India’s colourfulness, its vast scope and diverse landscapes blew me away and humbled me. I never knew how much India had to offer. One day, I sat on the palm tree-lined, golden beaches of Varkala; the next, I was thrown back in time to the stone age of inner India of Hampi.
Following that, I’d be in a bustling and overwhelming metropolis, such as Mumbai or Delhi, and then, hours later, I would be camping under the stars in the Thar desert or marvelling over the architectural beauty of the Taj Mahal.
SMELL – FRANCE
In the heart of the south of France, in the region of Marseille, you will find the sweet and soothing scents of Lavender from the miles and miles of rolling lavender farms stretched across this region. This is why France has stolen the show for scent.
Spend a day hiking through the French countryside, breathing in this bedtime tonic. Then, conclude the day in an authentic French vineyard, chowing down on lush, smelly cheese and releasing your inner wine connoisseur, sampling—and smelling—the world’s most famous wine.
France reminds me of life’s simple pleasures, slow living, sensualness and natural, unspoilt beauty.
SOUND – JAMAICA
If you have been fortunate enough to experience Jamaica, then this will not come as a surprise. This little Caribbean island has to be one of the most musical-obsessed nations on the planet.
Every street corner has drums and musicians breaking out, taxi drivers playing music at 100 decibels, and what seems to be a constant party and celebration of music and life around the island. Everywhere you go in Jamaica, you can hear loud music. So much so that recently, the government had to place a musical curfew!
Music is a form of cultural expression here, and it is home to Bob Marley and the Wailers. It has taken on as almost a spiritual practice to them. Music was a way out of poverty and has allowed a form of liberation for the people of Jamaica. It’s beautiful to see so much passion and soul through music here.
TOUCH – THAILAND
The home of the Thai massage. But don’t be fooled; this massage isn’t intended to be a form of relaxation. Suppose you have ever had the pleasure of being contorted and wrung into a million pieces and directions.
In that case, you will know, but the liberation and freedom you feel after is second to none. Massage originated in China and became a therapeutic healing modality worldwide. Unblocking all the channels and glands in the body and allowing our body to come back into harmony and equilibrium.
Touch is an integral part of our society. We need 12 hugs daily to satisfy our mental well-being, which I think we are all deprived of! Touch is healing and makes us feel safe in the right environment.
So, if you can, treat yourself to a massage or visit the land of smiles and experience the incredible healing powers of Thai massage and silky white sand under your feet while your mouth burns from the overpowering Chilli and Lime in your Tom Yum.
TASTE – ITALY
Mamma Mia! The wonderous Italia. It is said to be home to the best food in the world.
Not only does Italy serve up an array of carb-laden, belly-busting delights such as pizza, pasta and gelato, but it’s also renowned for its impeccable quality of ingredients grown from top to boot, freshly caught seafood of their mountainous shores and, of course, the pure LOVE they put into their food.
Not only does the food taste exquisite, but the sentimental meaning behind food for them is just as important to the Italians and Sicilians.
Meal times mean community and family. Eating together is a daily event and a vital part of their society. This shared adoration for their food, combined with the Dolce Vita way of living, makes the Italian way of life and their cuisine taste even sweeter.
Conclusion
In conclusion, travelling is more than visiting new places and taking pictures. It’s about experiencing the world and all its sensory delights.
