3 Weeks in Bali Itinerary: Guide to Authentic & Beautiful Bali

Are you seeking the perfect, soulful, authentic 3 Weeks in Bali Itinerary? And do you want to escape the tourist traps and binge-drinking culture of Bali’s west coast? Then this guide is perfect for you.

Bali is an incredible destination filled with natural beauty, rich and deep spiritual traditions, and many incredible things to do and experience.

Lumpuyang Temple – Book a Tour HERE

However, in recent years, I sadly have started seeing Bali poisoned by unsustainable tourism and detrimental construction that this sacred little island cannot withstand.

It breaks my heart to see the wonderful culture being stripped away; that’s why I felt called to write this post: to breathe life back into Bali’s lesser-known and more authentic side.

For travellers who wish to escape the inauthentic, Western version of Bali, get right into the heart of Bali, and support the locals rather than huge chain hotels and beach clubs.

JIMBARAN (1 Night)

Personally, I feel Jimbaran is the ideal place to start your 3 weeks in Bali, as it’s extremely close to the airport and more importantly away from the craziness of neighbouring party towns, Kuta and Seminyak.

Jimbaran is still a working fishing village with a more local feel in the backstreets. You can get straight off the plane and base yourself here for one night before heading into the centre of Bali.

Jimbaran is where you’ll find the famous sunset beach restaurants strung along the beach. Local freshly caught fish is served on a table in the sand. Is there any better way to start your first night in Bali?

LOCAL TIP: If you want to go shopping and nightlife for the first night, you could visit Seminyak or Canggu instead of Jimbaran.

HOW TO GET TO JIMBARAN – From the Airport

Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport is 3 km north of Jimbaran. But getting to your accommodation with traffic can still take over 15 minutes.

LOCAL TIP: When leaving the airport, you’ll be swarmed by hundreds of bluebird taxi drivers. They charge significantly more than Grab or Go-Jek, but after a long flight, for the hassle, it’s sometimes worth it. Or you can pre-book transfers HERE.

WHERE TO STAY IN JIMBARAN

There are many options for places to stay in Jimbaran, most of which are close to the beach.

I have included some resorts here as options for those seeking them, but I always suggest booking into the more affordable, locally run guesthouses and hotels. You get a much more authentic experience.

Here are some of our favourite options for luxury, moderate boutique-priced, and budget stay in Jimbaran:

Luxury Stay:

1. Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay: This luxurious beachfront resort offers elegant villas with private pools, stunning ocean views, and impeccable service. It features multiple dining options, a spa, and various recreational activities. The most luxurious was to start your 3-Week Bali Itinerary.

2. Belmond Jimbaran Puri: A luxury resort in a tropical garden, Belmond Jimbaran Puri offers spacious villas and cottages with traditional Balinese architecture. The resort provides direct access to the beach, a spa, and a beachfront restaurant.

Mid-Range Stay:

Jimbaran Bay Beach Resort and Spa by Prabhu: This resort offers accommodations with an outdoor pool and swim-up bar. Guests can also enjoy cocktails at the rooftop bar overlooking the sea. Jimbaran’s seafood restaurant strip is within walking distance.

Budget Stay:

1.Kubu Kak Dudung Villas: Kubu Kak Dudung Villas offers simple yet cosy wooden rooms near Jimberan Beach. It provides a swimming pool, a restaurant, and a friendly atmosphere for budget-conscious travellers.

2. The Astari Villa & Residence: This incredible hotel looks like a 5-star place with a hostel budget. It’s a short drive to Jimbaran beach. It has a lush setting and impressive swimming pool.

THINGS TO DO IN JIMBARAN

If you have one day and one night to spend in Jimbaran, Bali, you can explore several activities and attractions.

sunset ocean scenery

Additionally, Jimbaran is renowned for its fresh seafood, with some excellent restaurant options to try. Here’s a suggested itinerary with restaurant recommendations:

  1. Morning Beach Visit: Start your day by heading to Jimbaran Beach. Enjoy a peaceful stroll along the sandy shore, enjoy the beautiful views, and dip your toes in the ocean.
  2. Jimbaran Fish Market: Experience the local culture and vibrant atmosphere at the Jimbaran Fish Market. Explore the stalls filled with fresh seafood and observe the local fishermen in action.

  2. Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay: If you want a luxurious dining experience, head to this upscale resort. Their beachfront restaurant offers exquisite seafood and international cuisine in a stunning setting.

THE NUSA ISLANDS (3 NIGHTS)

The Nusa Islands, situated off Bali’s southeast coast, form a trio of larger islands closer to the mainland than the Gili Islands mentioned earlier.

Among these islands, you’ll find the iconic T-Rex-shaped rock formation near the renowned Kelingking Beach, which has gained significant popularity on social media as one of Indonesia’s most famous landmarks.

If you prefer a slower pace of travel and seek adventurous experiences, the Nusa Islands offer a distinct charm, making them an ideal destination for families, couples, and backpackers.

Blue Lagoon, Nusa Ceningan

THE NUSA ISLANDS

Nusa Lembongan, the most populated island, attracts many visitors who choose to stay here. The second Island, Nusa Ceningan, its neighbouring island, is the smallest of the three. Lastly, Nusa Penida, the largest among them, is also the most remote. A 3 weeks in Bali itinerary wouldn’t be complete without a trip to our favourite islands!

If you have a limited timeframe of fewer than three weeks in Bali, you can opt for a day tour to Nusa Penida, such as the one provided in this itinerary. This tour conveniently arranges all your travel and transportation, ensuring you can relish an exciting day on the island.

I am leaving you to stay on Ceningan or Lembongan, joined by a small bridge for easy access. These are our personal favourite islands incorporated into this 3 Weeks in Bali Itinerary.

Cafe Padan, Dreamland Beach – Nusa Lembongan

HOW TO GET TO NUSA LEMBONGAN FROM GILI

You must take a boat and land transportation from the Gili Islands to Nusa Lembongan. Here is a suggested route:

  1. Boat from the Gili Islands to Bali: Take a boat from the Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, or Gili Meno) to Padangbai Harbor in Bali. Several boat operators provide services between the Gili Islands and Bali, such as BlueWater Express, Gili Getaway, and Scoot Fast Cruises. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the weather and sea conditions.
  2. Land Transfer to Sanur: Once you arrive at Padangbai Harbor in Bali, you must arrange a land transfer to Sanur, a popular departure point for boats heading to Nusa Lembongan. You can easily find taxis or private drivers at the harbour to take you to Sanur. The travel time is around 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the traffic.
  3. Boat from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan: You can catch a boat to Nusa Lembongan from Sanur. Several boat companies operate frequent services between Sanur and Nusa Lembongan, such as Rocky Fast Cruises, Scoot Fast Cruises, and D’Camel Fast Ferry. The boat ride typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes.

To ensure availability, check the schedules and book your boat tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP

A popular excursion from Nusa Lembongan is the Nusa Penida day trip, offering a chance to explore the neighbouring island’s stunning landscapes and iconic attractions. It is an picture perfect part of your 3 Weeks in bali itinerary.

high angle shot of nusa penida in bali indonesia
Nusa Penida

The day trip typically lasts a full day, starting early in the morning and returning in the evening.

It involves a boat ride from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida, where you’ll embark on an adventure to discover the island’s natural wonders.

LOCAL TIP: One of the highlights of the Nusa Penida day trip is the opportunity to visit Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach. Choosing a tour with these locations is important, as not all tours cover them. Like this one HERE 👈

These two beaches are considered some of the island’s most picturesque and breathtaking spots. Atuh Beach captivates visitors with its turquoise waters, towering limestone cliffs, and stunning panoramic views.

Diamond Beach, located nearby, offers a dramatic seascape with its unique rock formations, pristine white sand, and crystal-clear waters.

In addition to Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach, the Nusa Penida day trip often includes visits to other notable sites. Some popular stops may include

Kelingking Beach, known for its T-Rex-shaped cliff and spectacular views; Angel’s Billabong, a natural infinity pool formed by rock formations; and Broken Beach, a natural rock arch with a stunning blue lagoon.

LOCAL TIP! DO NOT swim here at the bottom of T-rex beach. Many tourists underestimate the currents, and every month people ‘un-alive’ themsleves by getting dragged out to see and drowning. Please do not swim here!

SIDEMEN (2 Nights)

Sidemen, Bali, is a charming, serene village nestled amidst lush green rice terraces and scenic landscapes. It is one of my favourite places on the island, and a 3 weeks in Bali itinerary wouldn’t be complete without it!

Known only currenly by expats and locals, it is often missed by tourists. (which isnt a bad thing.) That’s why for now, it has retained its Balinese charm.

Sidemen has a very tranquil atmosphere and traditional way of life.I feel Sidemen is what Ubud may have been 50 years ago. You really can get a taste for the authentic Balinese way of living here.

Our Hotel Arta Nadi Villa

Here, you can immerse yourself in the beauty of nature, take leisurely walks through the picturesque countryside, and witness the local Balinese culture up close.

The village is dotted with traditional Balinese homes, quaint guesthouses, and small family-run restaurants where you can savour authentic Balinese cuisine.

CANDIDASA (2 Nights)

Candidasa is a peaceful coastal town in eastern Bali, offering a quieter beach resortaway from the crowds of Canggu and Uluwatu.

Candidasa is one of the last remaining white-sand beach villages in Bali that hasnt been overrun by tourists and contruction.

Although I have already seen that a russian develooer is planning to make a huge construction site here, which breaks my heart. Please use platforms like Change to petition agianst these deveopments and destroying the sacredness and culture of Bali.

Candidasa has Some of Bali’s Best Beaches ( Virgin Beach)

The journey from Sidemen to Candidasa in a Grab or GoJek will take approximately 30mins to 1hr, depending on traffic and road conditions.

WHERE TO STAY IN CANDIDASA

Being a beautiful beach resort, I have handpicked the best stays on or steps away from the sand. Here are recommendations for a luxury stay, a mid-range stay, and a budget stay on the beach in Candidasa:

Luxury Stay:
  1. Nirwana Beach & Resort: This luxurious beachfront resort offers stunning ocean views and elegant accommodations. They provide a tranquil and indulgent retreat with private pool villas and exceptional service. The resort also features a beautiful infinity pool, a spa, and multiple dining options.
Mid-Range Stay:

Please note that availability and prices may vary, so checking their websites or contacting the accommodations directly for the most up-to-date information is advisable.

THINGS TO DO IN CANDIDASA

When visiting Candidasa, Bali, you’ll most likely just want to lie on the white powdery beaches and swim in the rare clear water! However if you can’t sit still in the Bali heat for very long like I, then there are tons of amaxing tours and temples nearby to see.

  1. Snorkel the Blue Lagoon: There are numerous dive sites in the area, including the famous Blue Lagoon and the USAT Liberty Shipwreck.
  2. Visit Tenganan Village: Take a trip to the nearby traditional village of Tenganan. Known as one of Bali’s oldest villages, Tenganan offers a glimpse into Bali’s ancient culture, showcasing traditional houses, weaving techniques, and unique customs!
  3. East Bali Temple Tour
  4. Explore Tirta Gangga Water Palace.
  5. Discover Goa Lawah Temple: Explore the unique Goa Lawah Temple, the Bat Cave Temple. This ancient Hindu temple is built around a cave inhabited by thousands of bats and holds spiritual significance for the locals.
  6. Visit the Virgin Beach! (One of the best beaches in Bali in my opinion!)

THE SECRET GILI ISLANDS (3 NIGHTS)

So, most people looking to travel to Bali have heard of the Gili Islands. These Islands situate in the north of Lombok. However did you know there was a SECRET set of gilis in the South?!

These southern islands have been nicknamed the ‘secret Gili Islands’ and they are still mostly a hidden secret for travellers!

There are three habitable ones (habital, but VERY basic) Gili Nanggu, Gili Sudak and Gili Kedis.

I went to Gili Nanggu for a festival about 6 years ago. It was so remote and the water was so clear. It really felt like you were on your own castaway island!

gili nanggu off lombok - bali 3 weeks in bali itinterary
Day Trip to Gili Nanggu

HOW TO GET TO THE SECRET GILI ISLANDS

  1. Boat Transfer: At Padang Bai Harbor, you can purchase a ticket for a fast boat or a public ferry to Lombok. Fast boats are the most popular option as they offer a quicker and more direct transfer taking around 4 hours. However there is a car ferry which is slower (7hours) but extremely cheap at $3 a crossing and a larger ship! (Better for sea sickness).
  2. Flying: You can also fly to Lombok from The Airport in Bali.
  3. Arrival on Lombok: Once you arrive there, you can take transfer, a taxi, or rent scooters and drive yourself to the chosen Gili islands.

It’s recommended to check the boat schedules in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, and book your tickets to secure your seat.

Additionally, sea conditions can vary, so it’s advisable to be prepared for potential changes or delays in boat services.

  6. Visit Lombok! Kuta Lombok has some of the best beaches in Indonesia! nd Senaru is incredible for volcano hikes and waterfall exploring! You could stop at either of these for a few nights, or visit them instead of the Gili Islands!
  7. Visit Lombok Pink Beach
  8. Do the UNMISSABLE Komodo Island Boat Trip! (Below)

Amed is one of my favourite, understated places in Bali! It is a wokring fishing village in East Bali, known for its natural beauty, traditional fishing communities, and incredible diving opportunities!

Amed has a authentic vibe to it, but still has a Ex-pat community. It feels off the beaten track but its also got lots to do and some restaurants, bars and live music!

Surrounded by green rice terraces and dense forests, Ubud is renowned for its traditional arts and crafts, including painting, sculpture, and traditional dance performances. It is well worth a trip, howveerr i found it very overwhelming.

ULUWATU (2 Nights)

Uluwatu, once a quint little surfer village on the edge of Bali, is certainly getting more traction these days. Last time I went there was lots of contruction going on, it is definatley changing, as is the rest of Bali!

It is like the cooler, quieter version of Canggu right now, with much better beaches and alot less traffic!

Check out our post on Best Beaches in Uluwatu!

However, crowds are starting to sniff this out and I do fear that Uluwatu may soon be swallowed up by the infiltration of the Bali crowds in coming years.

However for now it’s an amazing base to discover the best beaches on the island, surf, party and chill out!

DAY TRIP TO NUSA DUA

30 mins east of Uluwatu you’ll hit the resort town of Nusa Dua. Driving into Nusa Dua feels like you’re on a completely different island. It’s a hotel town with manicured gardens and very little sign of local life. It is the ‘done up’ version of Bali.

I love Nusa dua for the beaches that are way more accesbile and less crowded than Uluwatu. Also no big waves make it perfect for swimming!

Nusa Dua is a luxurious resort located on Bali’s southern coast, known for its pristine beaches, upscale accommodations, and world-class amenities. If you’re looking for a sophisticated and exclusive vacation experience, Nusa Dua is the perfect destination.
