Bali is often referred to as the Island of the Gods. As soon as you step off the plane, it’s easy to see why. Bali is bursting at the seams with vibrant culture and spirituality.

Bali is very special to me and very unique because it blends spirituality, community, breathtaking landscapes, and a thriving expat culture. It has everything you need packed into a 60km radius!

I always say it is the closest you’ll get to the amenities you get when living in the West but with all the beauty and soulfulness Asia provides!

The 5-Day Bali Itinerary

In our carefully crafted 5-day Bali itinerary, we embark on an immersive journey through the heart of this enchanting island, exploring its best bits in just five days!

From the artistic haven of Ubud to the cliffside charm of Uluwatu, using these two towns as bases allows you to explore the island’s highlights in a limited time frame!

We delve into lush green (and Instagram famous!) rice terraces, chase waterfalls in off-the-beaten-track Sidemen, and beach hunt on day trips to neighbouring islands like Nusa Penida. All my favourite spots combined into one.

UBUD (2 Nights): The Spiritual Heart of Bali

In Bali’s central highlands, Ubud is a captivating spiritual hippy haven. It is known as Bali’s cultural or spiritual heart, and it’s not hard to see why.

I personally find Ubud very overwhelming now due to the influx of tourists. So finding the right place to stay is vital!

TOP TIP: Stay in areas like Penestanan or Mas. These neighbouring villages still have the traditional Bali feel that Ubud used to have years ago, but still within 10 minutes of the action! (And less traffic!)

There is so much to do in Ubud, from hiking the ricefields and hills, exploring boutique cafes, and indulging in various vegan options and tons of Yoga!

I always feel refreshed after a soulful visit to the (Outskirts of Ubud!) If I stay in the centre, it can be quite a different story…

Where to Stay in Ubud to Avoid Crowds:

To avoid crowds and be immersed in nature while staying in Ubud, consider accommodations on the outskirts or neighbouring villages where the environment is quieter and more serene. Here are a few recommendations for places to stay in Ubud that provide a peaceful and nature-immersed experience:

Luxury Stay:

Viceroy Bali: Guests rave about Viceroy Bali’s unparalleled luxury, private pool villas, and breathtaking rice terrace views. Cascades Restaurant’s attentive staff and exquisite dining provide an exceptional and pampering experience.

The Kayon Resort Ubud: The Kayon Resort Ubud epitomizes indulgence, featuring opulent villas, impeccable personalized service, and a serene ambience surrounded by lush landscapes. This is one of my favourite hotels in Bali. The view from the pool is simple to do. I don’t know many other places in the world like this.

Boutique Stay:

Bambu Indah: This boutique bamboo stay offers a unique and authentic experience with its antique Javanese teak wood houses, eco-friendly ethos, and magical setting by the Ayung River. Guests praise this boutique gem’s intimate connection with nature, sustainable practices, and authenticity.

Budget Stay:

Pertiwi Bisma 2: Pertiwi Bisma 2 provides budget-conscious travellers a comfortable stay and a fantastic pool amid tropical gardens and rice paddies. Guests appreciate the friendly staff, clean accommodations, and the convenience of being close to Ubud’s attractions without the hefty price tag.

DAY 1 – Ubud:

I have two options for your first day here. If you are here on holiday to have fun, consider the Cretya Day Club on the rice terraces. It is a cheap entry ($3) with a stunning pool overlooking the rice fields.

If this set-up sounds like what you desire from your holiday, but minus the younger and livelier crowds, head to Kanyon Resort; it is much more upmarket. Entry is around $20; however, you get a portion of that back to spend on food and drink.

Alternatively, if you are struggling to lounge around on your holiday, start your cultural exploration of Ubud by strolling through the vibrant (and slightly overwhelming!) centre. Although busy, it’s well worth a visit, as traditional markets and art galleries flood the streets. You can also see the Ubud Palace and temples in the town.

I then recommend walking the Campuhan ridge at sunset or taking a small trek on the paths through the rice fields or Monkey Forest in central Ubud to shake away the jet lag.

Kickstart your first evening in Ubud with the mesmerizing Kecak dance, an essential cultural experience in Bali. This traditional performance brings Balinese mythology to life, offering a captivating glimpse into the island’s vibrant heritage. I think it is a must-do experience to visit Bali!

I highly recommend grabbing your tickets in advance, as they get very booked in peak months. To do this, Head to the Ubud Palace, which is opposite one of the lively market halls, and you will see the men handing out tickets at the gates!

Alternatively, you can opt for hassle-free planning by booking tickets online, complete with a convenient hotel transfer. I’m sure your hotel can help you with this! You can also use booking sites like Viator.

Day 2: Exploring Bali from Ubud – The Gateway to North & East Bali

Ubud serves as an incredible base for venturing into the enchanting landscapes of Bali’s north and east, offering many experiences for every traveller.

Whether you crave the thrill of hiking up a volcano at sunrise, the serenity of waterfall hunting in Sidemen, the awe-inspiring allure of ancient temples in Ubud, or the unique offerings of East Bali – this cultural hub has it all.

Volcano Sunrise Hike:

For the early birds, you can continue your Bali adventure by hiking up the most famous volcano in Bali at sunrise! Which sounds jaw-dropping as it is (if you get to the top on a clear day!)

Mount Batur, an active volcano, promises awe-inspiring panoramic views. Dive into this thrilling adventure and witness the world awakening beneath the golden hues of the rising sun.

Waterfall Hunting in Sidemen:

Alternatively, embark on a journey to Sidemen for a day of waterfall hunting amidst Sidemesn’s stunning hillsides and rice terraces! I discovered Sidemen for the first time last year in 2023.

I couldn’t believe this little remote village had been there all this time, and I’d never known. It quickly became one of my favourite places on this island. It’s still relatively undiscovered compared to tourist destinations like Ubud and Canggu.

If you want a taste of authentic Balinese life before tourism, Sidemen is one of the last places to find it!

Temple Exploration in Ubud:

Day 3: From Jungle to Coast

Morning:

After exploring Bali’s magical jungle heart, it’s time for some beach hopping or relaxation. First, I recommend heading to the enchanting Tegallalang Rice Terraces before you leave if you didn’t visit on your first day.

Here, you can meander through the intricate pathways surrounded by lush greenery, capturing the essence of Balinese agriculture. Revel in the picturesque landscapes and the traditional Subak irrigation system, and get some great content for social media if that’s your jam!

Option to discover a couple of Day Clubs that promise a picture-perfect lunch and jungle pool retreat just a stone’s throw away from the rice terraces.

Each boasts infinity pools that command breathtaking panoramas of the jungle and terraced landscapes below; these venues offer a unique experience authentic to Bali.

Option 1 – Kayon Resort:

Explore the unique experience at the Kayon Resort. For 500k entry (£25), relish a luxurious escape with 400k redeemable towards delectable food offerings. Lounge amidst nature, savouring the serene atmosphere.

Option 2 – Cretya Day Club

Made famous by Tik Tok in 2023, Cretya is a more budget-friendly yet stunning option at 50k entry (£3). However, you must pre-book to enter due to high demand!

Afternoon:

In the afternoon, you can begin descending the coast and look forward to some well-earned beach rest. Travel south to the beaches in Uluwatu and check into your chosen accommodation (listed below.) Uluwatu is the ultimate beach hoppers paradise with so many to explore.

After a long 3-hour drive to Uluwatu, you can rest and conclude your day with a delightful dinner at a cliffside restaurant in Uluwatu, such as Rock Bar at Ayana Resort, Manas, or the Mango Tree Café. Savour your meal while enjoying panoramic views of the sun setting across the Indian Ocean.

ULUWATU (3 Nights) & Nusa Penida Day Trip

Uluwatu is closer to the airport, making it an excellent base for your final three days in Bali. There are plenty of things to do on the Bukit peninsular, including day trips to the famous Nusa Penida, arguably Bali’s top Instagram card. You can also relax and explore some of the many white and black sand beaches in the South of Bali!
