Nestled in the heart of Southeast Asia, Borneo beckons with a siren’s call to intrepid travellers seeking a destination where nature’s grandeur, ancient traditions, and spiritual mystique converge.

This captivating island, the third-largest in the world, is divided between Malaysia and Indonesia, each offering a unique blend of experiences. In this 2-week itinerary, we’ll focus on the Malaysian side of Borneo, where dense rainforests, majestic peaks, and vibrant cultures come together in a harmonious dance.

The blog post primarily covers the Malaysian side of Borneo, focusing on destinations and experiences within the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. It includes highlights from Kota Kinabalu, Kinabalu Park, Sandakan, Kuching, and Sibu, all located in Malaysia.

Travelling Borneo really feels like an authentic, off-the-beaten-track adventure. I personally cannot wait to go back and dive deeper into the culture and history.

Indonesian Borneo (also known as Kalimantan) would require a separate itinerary encompassing different regions and attractions such as Palangkaraya, Banjarmasin, Tanjung Puting National Park, and more.

Exploring Indonesian Borneo would involve distinct cultural experiences, natural wonders, and a separate set of destinations compared to what’s covered in the provided itinerary for Malaysian Borneo.

Suppose someone intends to explore both sides of Borneo. In that case, they must plan two separate itineraries, consider visa requirements for Malaysia and Indonesia, and account for border crossings. Each side of Borneo offers unique charm and attractions, making it a diverse and fascinating destination.

The Best 2-Week Borneo Itinerary:

Day 1-3: Kota Kinabalu – Gateway to Sabah, Borneo

Starting your journey in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, is like stepping into the beating heart of Borneo. Having explored its bustling streets and vibrant markets, Kota Kinabalu is a city that offers a raw and authentic experience. The Filipino Market and Handicraft Market aren’t just tourist stops; they’re windows into the everyday life of locals!

Among my personal highlights is the street food scene near the markets. Trying local delicacies like “linopot” adds a flavour to your Kota Kinabalu experience. Haggling on an excellent deal on handmade art feels like a genuine interaction with the city’s artistic pulse.

Kota Kinabalu is gritty, lively, and honest. It’s about the markets’ authenticity, the street food’s unfiltered flavours, and the diverse urban landscape. So, as you explore Kota Kinabalu, remember to embrace the raw charm that defines this city – it’s not about romance but the genuine, unfiltered beauty of Borneo’s urban life.

Day 4-7: Kinabalu Park – Nature’s Paradise

Embark on the next leg of your Borneo adventure by heading to Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that cradles Southeast Asia’s highest peak, Mount Kinabalu. 

The journey to the park is as enchanting as the destination itself. I remember driving up in the taxi and being blown away by the views before we reached our destination! 

We only made a day trip to the park from KK, but if you have more time, I highly recommend staying there as it has much to offer. 

Once within the park’s embrace, the allure of Mount Kinabalu stands as a majestic backdrop. Whether you’re a summit seeker or opting for scenic trails, the park offers a trek through diverse ecosystems, unveiling unique flora and fauna at every turn.

Trekking through ancient mossy forests, the trails guide you through a botanical wonderland, showcasing pitcher plants, orchids, and other endemic species that thrive in this ecological treasure trove!

For history enthusiasts, the Kundasang War Memorial within the park provides a poignant reminder of Borneo’s role in World War II. Amidst the serene gardens, you can reflect on history while surrounded by the natural grandeur of the park.

For a direct and convenient journey, consider hiring a taxi or using a ride-sharing service, which takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Public buses from the Padang Merdeka Bus Terminal to Ranau are an option, followed by a taxi to the park, but schedules may vary. 

Day 8-10: Mantanani Islands: Hidden Beach Paradise

For those seeking a beach experience off the beaten path in Sabah, Malaysia, consider the lesser-known gem of Mantanani Island. Located off the northwest coast of Sabah, Mantanani is a group of three isolated islands—Mantanani Besar, Mantanani Kecil, and Lungisan—that boast pristine white sandy beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Mantanani Island is relatively untouched by mass tourism, offering a secluded and tranquil escape. The beaches here are idyllic, with powdery sand that invites you to relax under the shade of swaying palm trees. The shallow, clear waters surrounding the islands are perfect for snorkelling, allowing you to explore vibrant coral reefs and encounter a variety of marine life.

While more popular destinations like Kota Kinabalu and its nearby islands draw considerable attention, Mantanani Island offers a quieter alternative for those who seek a more secluded beach experience away from the usual tourist trails.

Getting to Mantanani island from Kota Kinabulu:

Mantanani Island is located off the northwest coast of Sabah, Malaysia. The distance between Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, and Mantanani Island is approximately 80 to 90 kilometres (50 to 56 miles), depending on the specific departure point and route.

To reach Mantanani Island from Kota Kinabalu, you typically take a boat or speedboat from the coastal town of Kota Belud or Kuala Abai. The boat journey can take around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on sea conditions and the type of boat used. 

Day 10-11: Sepliok- Wildlife Encounters

Sandakan is the gateway to Borneo’s world-famous wildlife havens! As the plane descends, you’ll feel the anticipation of venturing into a world where nature reigns supreme. 

Your first stop should be the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. This sanctuary brings you face-to-face with these incredible creatures. Observing the orangutans in their natural environment is a humbling experience, offering a glimpse into the dedicated efforts to preserve and rehabilitate these majestic animals.

Continue your wildlife immersion with visits to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and the Rainforest Discovery Centre. These conservation hubs provide invaluable insights into Borneo’s unique ecosystems.

Witnessing sun bears, the world’s smallest bear species, in their protected habitat and exploring the Rainforest Discovery Centre’s informative exhibits deepen your appreciation for the delicate balance between wildlife and their environment.

Getting to Sandakan / Sepliok from KK: 

Travelling from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan offers several options. The quickest and most convenient choice is a flight from Kota Kinabalu International Airport to Sandakan Airport, taking approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Alternatively, long-distance buses departing from the Inanam Bus Terminal are budget-friendly. However, the journey takes 6 to 8 hours. From Sandakan you can get a half an hour taxi to Sepliok.

Day 10-11: Kinabatangan River – Riverside Retreat

One of the hihglights of my Borneo trip has to be the overnight stay we did on the Kintabatangan river! We stayed in log cabins surrounded by the lush rainforest and abundant wildlife, it was authentic and rustic and we adored it.

In the day we would head out by river to spot orangutangs, crocodiles, flowers, birds and even elephants! By night we were entertained by our amazing local hosts with food buffets, dancing and even taken on night safaris into the jungle!

We had so much fun here and I reccomend staying at least 1 night to get the full expereince here, deep in the heart of Borneo, instead of a short day trip. Your stay along the Kinabatangan River is not just a retreat; it’s a profound immersion into the heart of Borneo’s biodiversity!

Day 12-14: Semporna Islands – Tropical Island Escape

Embark on a swift island-hopping adventure in the Semporna Islands, where turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs beckon. With just two days to explore, make the most of your time in this tropical paradise.

Spend your first day snorkeling or diving in the renowned waters of Mabul, known for its stunning coral gardens and diverse marine species.

On the second day, venture to Sipadan Island, a world-renowned dive site. While obtaining permits for Sipadan can be competitive, a day trip is well worth the effort. Witness an underwater spectacle with barracudas, turtles, and vibrant coral formations!

For a more cultural experience, visit the nearby Bajau Laut village on stilts, known as Bodgaya Island, to gain insights into the traditional seafaring lifestyle of the local community.

Alternatively, long-distance buses operate between Sandakan and Kuching, offering a more budget-friendly option with a considerable travel time of approximately 24 hours.

If you don’t fancy one of the other destinations on this itinerary, consider wrapping up your journey in Sibu, renowned for its serene spiritual retreats and captivating temples. The city unfolds with tranquillity, inviting you to explore its spiritual side.

The quickest and most efficient method is to take a flight from Kuching International Airport to Sibu Airport, with flight times generally ranging from 1 to 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you prefer a more scenic journey. In that case, you can opt for a bus or private car, taking around 7 to 8 hours to cover the approximately 400 kilometres of road distance between the two cities.
