How To Find The Sages of Sivarna?

If you have read The monk who Sold His Ferrari, you will be here trying to determine if you can make the same voyage as Julian.

The Answer is Maybe. In this passage, I will use my knowledge of India and the Himalayas to pinpoint where this mystical hidden monastery would be. However, we do not possess an exact location, only in theory.

The Himalayas

We know from the book that they are based in the depth and dangerous areas of the Himalayas, which narrows their search down to the North India and Western Nepal border.

Some people argue that the story is fiction. Others say we are not meant to know the location. Instead, we are told to cultivate it within ourselves.

The Passage from “The Monk That Sold His Ferrari” That first mentions The Great Sages of Sivarna.”

Julian said, “I need your help, Krishnan. I need to learn how to build a richer, fuller life.” “I would be honoured to assist you in any way I can,” the yogi offered. “But may I give you one suggestion?”Sure.”

“For as long as I have been caring for this temple in this little village, I have heard whisperings of a mystical band of sages living high in the Himalayas. Legend has it that they havered some system that will profoundly improve the quality of anyone’s life — and I don’t just mean physically. It is supposed to be a holistic, integrated set of ageless principles and timeless techniques to liberate the potential of the mind, body and soul.”

Julian was fascinated. This seemed perfect. “Just exactly where do these monks live?”

“No one knows, and I regret that I’m too old to start searching. But I will tell you one thing, my friend; many have tried to find them and failed — with tragic consequences. The higher reaches of the Himalayas are treacherous beyond compare. Even the most skilled climber is rendered helpless against their natural ravages. But if it is the golden keys to radiant health, lasting happiness and inner fulfilment that you are searching for, I do not have the wisdom you seek — they do.”

Julian, never one to give up easily, pressed Yogi Krishnan again. “Are you certain that you have no idea where they live?”

“All I can tell you is that the locals in this village know them as the Great Sages of Sivana. In their mythology, Sivana means ‘oasis of enlightenment’. These monks are revered as divine in their constitution and influence. I would be duty-bound to tell you if I knew where they could find them. But honestly, I do not know — no one does, for that matter.”

Uncovering The Sages of Sivarna’s Location

We know that Julian starts his enlightenment quest in a “little village in Northern India”, which leaves us some scope…We also know that the religion over there lends itself to Buddhism. Many of the Sages of Sivarna’s teachings are Buddhist and Yogic teachings.

Julian hiked into the mountains from a remote village for 5-6 days before reaching the Sages of Sivarna Monestry.

The Himalayas that spread from India in that period led us to circle Northern India, Nepal and Bhutan. All very spiritual and sacred places could give birth to such a group as the Sages of Sivarna.

In this passage section, we get told what Julian sees arriving at the Sage’s village.

“After walking for hours, along an intricate series of paths and grassy trails, the two travellers came upon a lush, green valley. On one side of the valley, the snow-capped Himalayas… On the other, a thick forest of pine trees sprouted, a perfectly natural tribute to this beautiful fantasyland.”

From this, we can see that the Sages of Sivarna Village had snow-capped mountains on one side. And lush, thick pine forests on the other, with a green valley.

From this, we can take away it wasn’t as high in the Himalayas, where it is all snow. It is further down enough to have a forest and meadows.

We also learn of a beautiful lake the Sages like visiting for meditation. Also, we know of an hour’s hike to a waterfall where they go to wash when they have had negative thoughts.

Using all this information, if will try to find possible areas of the Sages of Sivarna. Using the geographical data given in the book and the distance trekked by Julian.

Calculating the Distance Julian Trekked to Find the Sages of Sivarna

Julian hiked a near-death trail uphill for roughly six days. He started in a mountaintop village in India and ended up in the Himalayas. However, there is no guarantee it was still in India. The Himalayas stretch over a vast proportion of this area of Asia.

However, if Julian was averaging 8-10 hours of hiking a day, he could have walked 100-150 miles in 6 days. Maybe more, depending on how high it was and how fast he walked. This gives us a rough area to search in.

Potential Locations of The Great Sages of Sivarna

Somebody could only find the exact location by travelling to these villages and asking for directions / a footpath. The options of just too vast, as the Sages of Sivarna wouldn’t live in a town with a location name on google maps. It could be anywhere, off the grid, unknown to humanity, as intended.

However, we can pinpoint some potential start points for Julain’s Voyage to help us narrow down the locations.

1) Areas surrounding Darjeeling, India (Sikkim)

Darjeeling is a town in the Indian state of West Bengal. Known for its picturesque views of the Himalayan mountain range and tea plantations. It sits high enough in the Himalayas and has plenty of greenery and hiking trails.

Hiking six days into the mountains would lead you into the vast area of Northern India, Sikkim. Where there is an abundance of snow-capped mountains, pine forests and lakes.

2) Khangchendzonga National Park – Nepal / Bhutan

Khangchendzonga National Park is a protected area located in the Indian state of Sikkim. Named after Mount Khangchendzonga. It is the third-highest peak in the world, which lies within the park’s boundaries.

Khangchendzonga National Park is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, since 2016. It is now popular with hiking groups so, a secret band of sages may have already been found.

However, if you were to hike solo for six days from this surrounding area, you could reach Bhutan. Or the eastern ridges of Nepal, which are still somewhat undiscovered. The sages of Sivarna would likely be residents somewhere like Nepal, on the border of India.
